Today we are excited to announce Apprenda has raised $24 million in new funding, led by Safeguard Scientifics with participation from NEA and Ignition, in a display of confidence and commitment to our market position and continued growth.
I’ve been privileged to be the CEO at Apprenda since co-founding the company with Matt Ammerman and Abraham Sultan way back in 2007. During the past eight years, we’ve had the opportunity to create an amazing product and build an equally amazing team of professionals.
When we first started Apprenda, Platform as a Service (PaaS) was essentially unheard of. What was more unheard of was the idea that PaaS should be a software layer that any company can use to build their own clouds for their own developers. Our vision of helping enterprises convert their data centers into cloud platforms supercharged for developer productivity became a reality.
Over four rounds, we’ve now raised $56 million to invest in building our technology and market. We’ve found more than just money in our investors at Safeguard, NEA, Ignition, and Primary Ventures — we found true business partners. During these past few years, they’ve witnessed our growth and the onboarding of some of the world’s best and largest companies as customers.
Among other things, we will continue to aggressively invest in being the world’s most compatible PaaS, and in helping to fuel our market’s growth. We’ll also be investing more in our world-class team.
At Apprenda, we believe that no enterprise should be forced to get rid of existing investments or to adopt PaaS via a highly prescriptive approach. We believe PaaS is only doable one way – the customer’s way. This means that our technology had to be built to support everything upstream and downstream from our platform in a highly compatible way. This means you can bring existing applications as well as shiny new twelve-factor-based microservices.
It also means that you can run Apprenda on any infrastructure you want — whether it be bare metal, hypervisor, or IaaS based. Want to use Docker? That’s fine too. Your PaaS shouldn’t tell you what to do. In fact, you should be telling your PaaS what to do (we call that policy based management). We will continue to aggressively invest in our compatibility, ensuring that Apprenda is as plug-and-play as possible so that our customers can leverage all their existing investments.
Any good company is only as good as its people. With headquarters in Troy, N.Y. with substantial offices in New York City and Holland; we continue to recruit the best and brightest people to help continue growing our team.
During this round, we’ll be investing heavily in R&D, product, sales, and marketing. If you’re reading this and are interested in joining one of the world’s top cloud platform companies, please reach out.
The world around us is changing rapidly and every company is becoming a software vendor; we’re here to help see that message continue to become a reality. Being a good vendor requires that you’re a good steward of the market, especially in a market as new as enterprise cloud platforms.
We will continue to invest in evangelizing not just Apprenda but PaaS in general, and will be kicking off some market-level projects by the end of 2015 that will truly help propel the market forward, all while protecting the interests of our customers. Enterprise IT has a bright future ahead of it.
On a final note, I’d like to extend a huge thank you not just to Safeguard, NEA, and Ignition for their participation in this new funding, but also to our customers, partners, and Apprenda team members that make being CEO of this company such a joy.
