Where is the best place to find a tech job after San Jose and San Francisco?
Albany, New York.
That’s according to a new study from U.S. News and World Report charting the best cities to find jobs in software development and engineering.
The report looked at the strength of the overall job market in each of the 100 most populous metro areas and the year-over-year growth of opportunities in the technology sector in those areas.
It mentions that “Albany isn’t likely to come to mind as a leading technology center.” With research universities, including Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and SUNY Polytechnic Institute, there are a number of jobs in biotechnology, nanotechnology and life sciences.
Albany is also home to large corporations like General Electric and GlobalFoundries, where there are a number of open jobs for engineers, software developers and technicians.
One of the biggest problems to Albany’s growing tech industry has been finding and keeping qualified coders. The Business Review highlighted that struggle in a cover story earlier this year.
In the next six years, Albany is expected to fill 1,180 new jobs in software, web development and computer programming, according to data from the state Department of Labor. That is a 43 percent increase from 2012.
The median salaries for these jobs start at $60,000 and can go up to $150,000 or more. Still, it can be difficult to attract and keep employees here. Companies, such as CommerceHub, Autotask and Apprenda have been relocating employees to fill that need…
